The next two months promise to be exciting ones for residents and visitors alike as traditional community events are reimagined for safety and events borne of the pandemic become traditions.
While the Province of Ontario acknowledges that virtual and outdoor events remain the safest options for celebrating Halloween, it has also released guidelines for those who choose to trick-or-treat or hold gatherings on Halloween day.
On Monday, November 1, residents can share their jack-o-lantern artistry with the community and do good for the environment at Pumpkins on Parade at Milt Dunnell Field. Unpainted jack-o-lanterns can be dropped off at a designated area all day, and they will be lit and displayed from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. for vehicles and pedestrians to enjoy.
Anyone wanting pumpkins for animal feed can register by contacting Events Coordinator Andrea Macko to pick up after the event. The Town will compost any remaining pumpkins.
As the calendar turns to November, our community will commemorate Remembrance Week. On Saturday, November. 6, Veterans’ Decoration Day will occur as at St. Marys Cemetery from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Loved ones of veterans buried at St. Marys Cemetery are invited to place complimentary Canadian flags in veterans’ memories. Volunteers will ensure that all recognized veterans’ graves have a flag.
There will not be a Royal Canadian Legion parade and ceremony on the Sunday prior to Remembrance Day as per Legion command recommendations. A ceremony will take place at the Town Hall Cenotaph on Thursday, November 11 at 10:45 a.m. In the interest of social distancing, the ceremony will be live streamed on Facebook and residents without an Internet connection will be able to call in to listen via The Friendship Centre. Details will be released closer to the day.
The Christmas season will arrive in St. Marys on Friday, November 19 as the BIA again expands its Merchants Open House into three days of festive events and shopping promotions in the downtown. The lighting of the beloved WinterLights display at Milt Dunnell Field will be live streamed on the Town’s Facebook page at 7:00 p.m. that night for all to enjoy.
On Saturday, November 27 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Santa Claus will come to St. Marys via the Kinsmen Santa Claus parade, which will be a drive-through parade with locations to be determined. More information, including float submissions forms, will be available as the parade approaches.
The Holiday Home Tour returns after a successful inaugural year in 2020. The map launches on Monday, November 29 on the free Driftscape app and as a downloadable PDF. If your holiday decorations are among the best and brightest, contact Events Coordinator Andrea Macko with your address and display name.
St. Marys will again end the year with a bang on Friday, December 31 with the Rotary Club of St. Marys’ New Year’s Eve fireworks from the Grand Trunk Trestle at 6:00 p.m.
All events are subject to change as per COVID-19 regulations. More details will be released as each event arises and mandated social distancing and face covering protocols will be followed at each in-person event.
Be sure to follow the Town of St. Marys’ Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts for more information and updates as events draw near.
